The Spanish Minister for Education, Culture and Sport, José Ignacio Wert, attended the opening session of the 1st Meeting of Spanish and Israeli University Rectors, held on 25 June in Madrid and jointly organized by the Foundation, Casa Sefarad-Israel and the Israeli Embassy in Spain.

The meeting focused on the theme “Higher education in Israel: Presentation and opportunities for cooperation” and was chiefly designed to foster greater cooperation and the establishment of new agreements between universities in the two countries. The prestigious bilateral event was attended by rectors and vice-rectors from several public universities in Israel and by representatives of numerous Spanish universities. The Foundation was represented by César Álvarez Alonso, Director of Institutional and International Relations, and Ana Sada Huete, Head of Promotion.

The Israeli delegation was led by Manuel Trajtenberg, professor of economics at Tel Aviv University and one of the foremost economists in Israel, as well as overseeing the allocation of public spending for higher education and research in Israel. Trajtenberg served as economic advisor to former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and is widely regarded as a strong candidate to take over as Governor of the Bank of Israel.

The Israeli rectors and vice-rectors remained in Spain for several days after the event for a series of additional meetings with their counterparts at Spanish universities. is a public sector foundation that aims to promote the Spanish university system throughout the world. The foundation was set up by the Spanish government, with the support of Spain’s regional governments, the universities themselves and other institutions, on 23 December 2008.
